Writing Rules

– no passive voice (use active voice)
– no phantom pronouns (make sure your pronouns make sense)
– no misplaced modifiers (make sure your subject is right after your participial phrase)
– “this” rule (do not use “this” without specifying what “this” is)
– don’t put two independent clauses in one sentence without a semicolon (;)
 – parallel structure  (make sure each side is equal)

–  more fun not funner/ bigger not more big

–  watch plural vs. single

– watch tense

–  watch what part of speech used

–  -er comparing two things

–  -est for comparing three or more things

–  plural of single letter has apostrophe/ group of letters no apostrophe

–  write out numbers smaller than ten, anything larger written in numbers

–  -’s used for posesion of noun that doesn’t end in “s”

–  -s’ used for posesion of noun that ends in “s”

–  ”were” used for hypothetical cases, “was” used for current situations
