Setting up our Blogs

August 28, 2009 · 27 Comments

Please take seats at the computers, one newbie and one veteran to each computer.  If you are dropping the class, please don a dunce cap and stand in the corner (just kidding – relax).

Please Do Now:

  1. Follow these weblog-set-up-instructions-1.  (They were written for an earlier version of wordpress and may not be EXACTLY accurate.  Extra credit to anyone who revises them and emails me an updates copy.  Veterans please guide newbies through this process.)
  2. Follow these instructions-for-creating-a-blogroll. (Same deal.  Veterans, please update your blogroll so that the only links are www.wordpress.com, http://weissjournalism1.wordpress.com, and http://beachcomberonline.ning.com)
  3. Follow these instructions-for-setting-up-your-pictures.  (New rule for veterans and newbies: you MUST have a picture of yourself in your header.  Everyone needs to learn everyone else’s name, pronto.  If you are uncomfortable having your picture on the internet, readjust your blog settings to that it is not searchable by Google)

Today, students will:

  1. Have their pictures taken.
  2. Hand in your wordpress confirmation emails and your signed syllabus, if you haven’t already (Veterans: please hand in a sheet of paper with the URL of your blog).
  3. Take the following polls:
  4. Read the following article: http://www.miamiherald.com/news/education/story/1198534.html
  5. Write the “Who, What, Where, When, Why and How” of this article as a comment to this post.  EXAMPLE: Who – Mr. Weiss; What- Journalism Class; Where – Room 416; When – Period 7; Why – To write the school newspaper; How – By learning how to use wordpress.com and learning how to write proper articles.
  6. Write a one sentence summary of the article in your comment that includes the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How (Do NOT use the phrase “This article is/was about…”)
  7. Learn what a news lede is.
  8. Finalize positions for the paper.

Tonight’s homework is:

  1. Make sure your blog, blogroll and picture are 100% kosher by Tuesday morning.
  2. Read the following article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/26/education/26sat.html?_r=1&ref=education
  3. On your blog, post the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How, and write a one-sentence news lede that incorporates as many of these elements as possible.
  4.
