- Read just the first section below up to the question: What survival strategies should these dailies adopt? If some papers don’t survive, how will readers get news about the local school board or county executive?http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/10/battle-plans-for-newspapers/?hp
- Answer the question to the best of your ability without reading the ideas in the later sections of this article. We will use them in the coming days.
- The question is relevant because we currently have $1.58 in the Beachcomber account. Newspapers all over the world are in financial trouble and we are no exception. I want you to think of something creative and outside the box. What can local papers do to survive?
Today, students will:
- Receive quarterly assignments: http://joshd2010.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/staff-writers/
- Form section groups and choose J1 representatives.
- Self-assign group story ideas and responsibilities (Ideas from J2 here: http://joshd2010.wordpress.com/2009/02/10/j1-article-assignements/)
- Post J1 proposals representatives’ blogs.
- Tentatively divide up story responsbilities.
- Begin to plan reporting.
Tonight’s homework is:
- Contact your J2 editor (you’re a journalism by now – you should know how to track someone down).
- Obtain the following information: Phone number, email, class schedule, after school and weekend schedule.
- Obtain 3 bits of “secret” information about your editor that she is not telling the other members of your group (eg she is afraid of the dark, loves rollerskating, has a tattoo, etc).
- Post to your blog.

I think that newspapers really should work to stay up and working because I personally love getting the newspaper in the morning and opening it and reading it. Some newspapers should consider maybe only delivering the newspaper once or twice a week and then put it online for the remainder of the week. Readers will have to know that the information is still available but online instead so they can still get the information they need to know. Newspapers show opinions, interesting stories and much more that make them unique and fun to read and I think it would really be sad if the people that love to write would be put out of their jobs.

People used to say the Internet is the wave of the future, but presently, the Internet is NOW. Newspapers are outdated and waste tons of money and paper. People can read the same articles online at the newspaper’s websites, and most people use the computer/Internet daily anyway. Though it’s a major change that could possibly upset a lot traditionalists, newspapers should stop being printed, or at least in more minimal amounts, and just be distributed via the web. Though profits will be cut back from sales of printed newspaper, expenses will be as well once production costs are taken into account.

These daily newspapers should have special opinion articles that would not be put online. They should have their best writer write an opinions piece in the newspaper. If the writer becomes renoun, more people will purchase the newspaper to see what they have to say. If the writer can mix humor with news, such as The Daily Show or Colbert Report, more people will want to read this writer’s pieces.
Another thing they could do would be to sell pieces of their newspaper. They could allow people to purchase a spot on the newspaper and write their own opinions piece.

Our newspaper COULD be an online one…however, I dont know if many people would look at it if it is not on paper in their hands…On the other hand, if it is only online, we can recieve comments and feedback right on the articles.
Is there a way Beach High journalism students can get an article in the local larger papers such as the neighbors section in the Herald?
Mass text messages about sports scores/standardized test days and scores…and other important issuses can be sent to people who are signed up??

Before going out of business, these newspapers should put up a fight. Newspapers have been around for way too long to just be forgotten. After all, they are one of the most reliable sources around, unlike the internet. News given on the televion is reliable (depending upon which station youre watching) but they only give short clips of what is going on, rather than a detailed explanation that the newspaper gives.I say they tell their customers what they will be missing out on and maybe possibly offer them some sort of gift or little extra. If the customers realize what they will be missing out, they will maybe put efforts into saving it instead of letting it vanish. Also, many people dont use the internet or television for news, they rely on the ol’ newspaper. With this warning of the newspaper going out of business, the companis should also give their customers some sort of little extra, just so they can stay happy. Im not sure what this extra should be, but i feel as if the newspaper companies know what it will take to keep their industry going.

If the news’ paper companies don’t survie it would be a tragic loss. People would have to rely on television to maintain themselves informed. Also we would start getting our news on the internet. Maybe bloggers would start reporting the news. Mamybe these companies can start charging 50 cents more. Then if people want home delivery the company should one dollar more. I know this idea is not very creative, but maybe the BeachComber can sale candy like all od the clubs do. Selling candy would give a profit if you made j1 and j2 do it. While maybe local newspaper limit the copies they print. Furthermore they should limit the issues they print.

I personally believe that the only way that the newspapers are to remain printing is to evolve. The news section is going to be almost disintegrated, because online news updates will beat them easily. a greater emphasis will have to be placed on feature, opinion, and other sections like the crossword puzzle, etc. the papers will have to differentiate themselves from websites, in ordetr to compete; the news section will have to be online, also.

I think that the best thing for newspapers is the help of others. By buying an add in the newspaper and donating money in other ways helps a newspaper company succesfully publish their newspaper. I think the readers should pay for their news and to prevent them from not wanting to buy the paper because they can find the news somewhere else, the article should not be posted online. But I think better off to save the money and cost of paper and ink for the newspaper all the news should just be posted online. Alot of money would be saved and problems like this would be taken care of.
brittanywaserstein // February 10, 2009 at 6:20 pm |
I think that in order for local newspapers to survive, newspapers should be forbidden to be accessible online. Nowadays, since we are in a major depression, many people rather save their money on newspapers and instead depend on the internet to get the information. Also, many people depend on listening to the radio in order to be updated on what is going on. Why would people waste money on getting newspaper when they can save their money and instead get the same exact information online?
nadineg2012 // February 10, 2009 at 6:21 pm |
-They could cut costs by reducing the size of their papers. This doesn’t necessarily mean writing fewer articles, but they could make headlines, pictures, etc. smaller.
-I know it’s not quite original, but the papers could be printed in black in white.
-They could charge people to read articles online as well as in print.
Regardless of what methods they use to save their papers, they should NOT stop printing them. The internet will never be able to mimic the feeling of flipping through a crisp new paper, and on a more practical note, studies have shown that using the computer too much is actually bad for your eyes, attention span, etc.
RayL2012 // February 10, 2009 at 6:21 pm |
The internet can be a solution. There are many people who do not get newspapers because they read it online. Instead of printing; some papers should post their newspapers on the internet. If the readers want to continue reading the paper they can go online and subscribe to that paper.
Even if many dailies do not survive people will always want to know what is going on in the world. So i do not believe that all of the dailys will die off. Even if newspapers disapear, there will have to be a way of giving information to the world and the internet seems like a reasonable solution.
Lauren Peterson // February 10, 2009 at 6:21 pm |
I believe that the strategies that dailys could adopt could be to just cut down how often that they release the paper. Many times, there is nothing really important going on and people simply feel obligated to write about nothing, or state their opinion. If the news paper doesn’t survive, students will simply get their information through the News on television or their parents. Newspapers could lower the cost of the paper, reduce the space used, like editiorials and such. They could also not put their articles on the internet
hrynor // February 10, 2009 at 6:22 pm |
Ideas:
– Newspapers could lower the buying cost.
– Newspapers could limit the amount of articles posted on their websites so that people need to buy the newspaper in order to read the article.
– Newspapers could take out sections in the newspaper to make it cost less, sections that people show the least interest in (not the comics KIDS LOVE THOSE!! – my brothers still read them)
– Newspapers could be printed ONLY in black and white, once again to save money.
– TRY and get more advertisements in the paper by lowering the price for that, and maybe more people would be able to afford them.
hkramer14 // February 10, 2009 at 6:23 pm |
The newspapers are suffering big time. I suggest them getting wealthy sponsers. The sponser would pay for the paper, and in return the newspaper would sell and advertise it. For example, sprint would have their name all over the paper, not where the news is.
The beachcomber journalism students can go around to classes, with a tzedukah box in their hand, asking for donations. Their are sooo many classes here, and every penny counts. We can also have a bake sale, and/or sell candy. Each journalism 1 and 2 student brings in about two goodies (not all the same) and if we have enough, we dont have to make them that cheap.

1. They should take out the funnies and puzzles because, all though everyone enjoys them, they aren’t essential or important to read or understand. There are still comic books and puzzle books around. The purpose of a NEWSpaper is to provide NEWS to the consumer.
2. Print everything in black and white
3. Charge everyone who reads the paper online
If some papers don’t survive then everyone can get their information from the News while watching TV. Also, they can get it on the internet. There will be more money from lack of printing for their writers and they can charge people for the paper online, plus advertisement.
rachelcoller // February 10, 2009 at 6:38 pm |
Survival Strategy
Print the paper in just black and white.
-Decrease the size of headlines to create a shorter paper.
-Stop posting the articles on the internet, that way people would be forced to buy the paper.
-Or, charge for online articles.
People could get the information from television news. People will still be able to get the news from websites such as CNN.com

These dailies should be more vigorous in attaining revenue, and devote more time and effort to this task. They should print fewer papers and push subscriptions, and downsize the company (that is, if the employees are getting paid).
If not from newspapers, localers would be forced to put in the effort to seek out people with knowledge pertaining to a particular subject that has not been covered in a large paper. This would be much less convenient. Therefore, it is important that these newspapers stay alive.

Sorry again for the late response, absent.
Well theres only one real solution to keep the papers going, and thats getting money. Problem is, no one has it and those who do have it have other things to worry about besides newspapers. We could put it online since we are not funded, which I think would be the best thing for our paper. As far as other papers, I suggest upping the price SLOWLY, like maybe by a penny. Pennies add up and that would slightly help. Also, maybe there could be a section in the newspaper specifically for people. Like if they pay whatever amount of money, that person can write for the paper. Kind of like “Be a journalist for a day” kind of thing.
