The had the history of Calle Ocho and the events ahead of time. They also probably had the names of the organizers. the information about the actual festival (the atmosphere, music, dancing) was obtained by their presence there. Afterwards they got the quotes from the people, the stats on how many showed up and the quotes from the Organizer.
they got all of this information through research and interviews
The style is appreciative. The abundandt details about how GREAT the festval was and how much it means to latin people gave the whole article a positive style and overall idea.
“a colossal celebration of Hispanic culture Sunday afternoon”
“The screams of the crowd pushing toward the stage could be heard for blocks.”
“While not exactly in-line with the spicy essence of carnival, the free chewing gum, energy drinks, coupons, fans, necklaces, noisemakers and fabric softener, among dozens of other items, make Calle Ocho a can’t-miss for many.”

I think that the authors reported this story because it was a very big event. Also, it was local and there are a lot of hispanics in Miami who are interested in reading about this. The authors had to get previous information in order to state that “Not to be outdone by previous Calle Ocho block parties, this year’s festivities included shots at two world records.” The estimate to how many people attended the authors needed to get this information after the event. They got the information from organizers and people who attended. The authors use alot of descriptive language to engage the readers interest and make the event seem more lively. For example “The smell of fire-grilled meat was inescapable, and vendors’ cries of Arepas! Arepas! Arepas! echoed from countless booths. Men wearing Puerto Rican flag-capes were getting down with the thumping bass — yelling, clapping, jumping.”

- I think that these authors probably split up in order to cover all 23 blocks of the event. Then they probably made a lot of interviews at different spots and chose the best quotes for the spots that they could include the most detail in. They probably knew all the performers and the Guiness Record attempts by looking at websites and pamplets of Calle Ocho before the actual event. They got the quotes and the stands information at the scene and probably found out the statistic on the number of people at the event afterwards.
- The authors use specific details to describe the scene and make you feel excited and wishing you were there. Some examples are: ” On the stage in front of them, a quartet of dancers’ hips gyrated to a chest-rattling reggaeton beat blasting from concert speakers.” “The smell of fire-grilled meat was inescapable, and vendors’ cries of Arepas! Arepas! Arepas! echoed from countless booths. Men wearing Puerto Rican flag-capes were getting down with the thumping bass — yelling, clapping, jumping.”

this authors reported this story:
By the looks of it the authors went different ways and got different qoutes and images.
What information did they have ahead of time, what information did they get at the event, and what information did they have to get afterwards? How do you think they acquired all of this information?
The info they had ahead of time was how many blocks the bash was going to take up.How much organizers estimated the many people that were going to attend. The information that they gathered was the food that they were selling , the free stuff they were handing out, the music that was playing and the many performing artists. They As I assume got their info by as I stated before, the authors went their own ways and then gathered their information.

How do you think this authors reported this story? I think that the authors went ahead and got some background information and then attended the event to lively report it.
What information did they have ahead of time,? What is Calle 8 , the basic information about the event.
what information did they get at the event, and what information did they have to get afterwards? They got the people that went to the festival point of view and quotes of what they think about this event.
How do you think they acquired all of this information? I think they went interviewd people and did some background info.
Discuss the style of writing in this article. How do the authors use specific details to evoke a general emotion in the reader? The article shows the exitment and mood of all the people AT THE event.

The reporting is interesting, it gives the reader a pretty decent perspective on the calle ocho festival. Most likely, the writers had the information regarding where and when the event would be held and the artists who would be performing there. At the event, interviews and very careful observation were probably kicked into gear. Afterwards, they probably had to go to the people at the booths and ask what they were giving away because im sure that those lines were packed!. To get all of this information the article has to have been written by two individuals who were probably focused on reporting two different aspects of the calle ocho festivities. For example, one could have been covering atmosphere and people, while the other could have been focused on entertainment.
amandae2011 // March 17, 2008 at 5:14 pm |
I think the authors, prior to the event, knew what the event was (after research), and who would be performing. They probably got quotes at the event; but im not sure what information they would have acquired after.
The writing style of this piece is very descriptive. It provokes an image in the reader’s mind, which i think is extremely important, but not necessarily included in most news articles.
Like for example, when it says “Sweaty knots of hundreds of thousands of dancing and cheering revelers filled every street and sidewalk for 23 blocks….The smell of fire-grilled meat was inescapable, and vendors’ cries of Arepas! Arepas! Arepas! echoed from countless booths.”
That’s pretty descriptive. It almost makes you feel like you’re there.

1. I think the reporters did a very good job, very thorough.
2. Before- 30th festival in Calle Ocho.
During- Not to be outdone by previous
Calle Ocho block parties, this year’s
festivities included shots at two world
records.
After- Longtime friends José Quiroz and José
Ruiz won the double-6 tournament,
also netting five grand. They almost
didn’t get the chance. ”We were 15
minutes late,” Ruiz said, clapping his
friend’s shoulder. “We got the very
last table.”
3. The reporters probably acquired this information with research of previous Calle Ocho festivals and interviewing people who have gone to the previous festivals. Also, by attending this festival they probably got most of the information because they do describe some things.
4. The style is sort of an image that is easily seen by the reader. The reporters describe a lot of things and makes the reader feel as if they were there.
5. The authors do use words to evoke emotions. “On the stage in front of them, a quartet of dancers’ hips gyrated to a chest-rattling reggaeton beat blasting from concert speakers.” This sentence makes me, at least, feel as if I was dancing too, or watching people dance. It is very happy or exciting or even thrilling.

I think they are reported from a point of view of pro towards the festival
I don’t think they got any info ahead of time because they described at the current of the fest, they got all their info there. They acquired all their info by going there and talking to people there.
2. Discuss the style of writing in this article. How do the authors use specific details to evoke a general emotion in the reader? Find specific examples of the authors’ word choices that have this effect.
Um well this picture the author painting with words is really evoking emotion from the authors of how coolio it was
carlosm2010 // March 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm |
some info that the author might of had befor the event is some calle ocho background like when it started and what has been included over the years as well as sponsors of calle ocho, amount of food booths, names of organizers and the artist performing at the event. some info that they might of found out durring calle ocho is the whole guiness world record attempts, the food given, amount of people who went and most statistical information (amount tortillas sold money made…). of course quotes were aquired durring that day
oscart2007 // March 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm |
They probably wrote this because a lot of people go to calle ocho. If they were going they needed to know what calle ocho is and how it go started. They also taked about their world record so they needed to know about that. They saw thing at the festival and made observations like the venders.
arielaz2009 // March 17, 2008 at 5:16 pm |
1.The author reported the story as a review of the event. It shies away from opinions, yet the article only portrays positive images of the event. In a sense, it is a bit biased because it doesn’t present the other varying events of the festival.
2.The author had to get information about the Guinness World Records and the set goals of the day. The list of event winners, performers, and giveaways could have all been acquired during the event while the amount people the festival turned out had to be known afterwards.
3.I think the information had to be acquired through interviews and observation.
4.The style of writing is effective in “painting a picture” of the event.
5.“The screams of the crowd pushing toward the stage could be heard for blocks.”
“The smell of fire-grilled meat was inescapable, and vendors’ cries of Arepas! Arepas! Arepas! echoed from countless booths. Men wearing Puerto Rican flag-capes were getting down with the thumping bass — yelling, clapping, jumping.”

2. what information did they get at the event, they got quotes from the people during and what information did they have to get afterwards? How do you think they acquired all of this information? And got info from people and organizers
3. Discuss the style of writing in this article. The author was very descriptive and colorful with his writing
4. How do the authors use specific details to evoke a general emotion in the reader? Find specific examples of the authors’ word choices that have this effect. Sweaty knots of hundreds of thousands of dancing and cheering revelers filled every street and sidewalk for 23 blocks

For this story I think it was very crucial that the reporters were hands on and experienced Calle Ocho so as to give a firsthand impression on the festival. They probably split the carnival and questioned different people during Calle Ocho activities and asked the people what was going on and what they thought about it.
They researched the festival ahead of time in order to learn its history then when they were there they connected the information and linked it with information they gained such as how many people were there and what the event looked like.
joselyng2010 // March 17, 2008 at 5:17 pm |
I think the reporters did a good job. They painted a lot of images. They probably knew who were performing, the date the calle Ocho was on and other stuff. In the event they knew how big the crowds were, what people were selling for food and who one what. After the event they got reactions from the public. Specific words such as “inescapable and Sweaty knots of hundreds” gave me the impression that the festival was awesome! They [authors] were portraying the calle Ocho as a successful and fun event!
