Please Do Now:
- Read the following article: http://www.miamiherald.com/516/story/298505.html
- Brainstorm as many “angles” (different ways to write the story) as you can think of to cover this information.
- Post your response as a comment to this post.
Today, students will:
- IN SECTION GROUPS, brainstorm the top 5 stories that you would like to write OVER THE NEXT 2 MONTHS. This means you have to look into the future and think about what will be happening over the coming months.
- INDIVIDUALLY, branstorm 3 angles for each story. Post these angles on your blogs.
Tonight’s homework is:
- Coordinate with your editors on story deadlines.
- REMEMBER - I am grading 3 stories this quarter, with prewriting and reflection. You need to have a MINIMUM of 1 story by 2 weeks from now, so I can give you midmarking period grades.

stephaniea2009 // November 7, 2007 at 6:16 pm |
Angle One : Focusing solely on the opinion of the voters , people such as those who are socially important , persons of money and certain distinction in business , and how they feel about the election and its candidates
Angle Two: To interview only the two candidates that are to be up against eachother in the runoff election and how they perceive the election
Angle Three: Talk to the present (soon to be former) mayor and get his take on the election and who he thinks would be a better qualified mayor

The different angles of angles for this story
1. The candidates point of view
2. The voters perspective.
3. (Residents)The other people that are just in the middle that are not voting or are the candidates
4.The people who are actually working with the candidates.

I would pick the point of view from the voters perspective because on the end they will chose their leader. And for the interviews I would pick the canidates, what their future plans are and what they are trying to do to make the city better. I would later do research to find history or background on the canidates. Also I would pick an angle that shows another point of view than just canidates and voters. (I still dont really know what an angle is)

For different story angles, I would write the story on those that voted for Cruz. Also, those that voted for Bower. Another angle to write this on would be from the people that handled the ballots and the candidates of course. Plus, the people that didn’t voted the first time and the ones that won’t vote at all. The outside people; those that live around there and see what’s going on right outside their houses.

1. You could write this story in the view of the voters. Like for example… Will you vote again? Will you vote for the same person? (That kind of stuff) (You would talk to voters, especially those that aren’t so into the campaign, just people that vote because they are residents of Miami Beach)
2. You could also cover this as writing about the candidates and how they did, instead of writing about the campaign and then backing it up with how the different candidates ‘placed’.
3. You could write this in the point of view of the people that currently hold office.
4. You could interview voters that are very devoted followers of the candidates.
5. You could interview voters of every kind (devoted, non devoted), but of different ages, gender, sexuality, income, etc.
6. You could interview non-voters. (Why didn’t you vote?)
alessiap2011 // November 7, 2007 at 6:27 pm |
Different angles to write the story on:
- You can interview the current mayor and comissioners to get their opinion on the candidates
-You can write little ‘political biographies’ on each.
- Ask citizens that didn’t vote the first time if they would vote a second time.
-Ask voters whom they voted for. [exit poll]
-Ask different age groups (demographic changes in voting history)
-Non-voters… Why did they decide not to go vote?

5 Different Angles
1) Find people who didn’t vote and ask them why. Compare it to the reasons why people did vote. Did this make a difference to the election?
2) Two different point of views, campaign Manager of Commissioners Matti Herrera Bower’s “promises” and Simon Cruz “promises”.
3) Mayor who is leaving the office. How does he feel who he thinks will make a better mayor after him?
4) Teenagers in schools of Dade County. I would interview teenagers with different raises and ethnicities.
5) Regular voters a wide variety of people. Example people that are voting again or who didn’t vote and people that do not care.
