Mr. Weiss – Journalism I – Faculty Adviser

Post-write / Round Two

September 28, 2007 · 18 Comments

Please Do Now:

  1. Most of you have now successfully turned in your final draft of your first piece of journalistic writing.
  2. Answer the following question as a comment to this post:  What are your personal strengths in cultivating sources, gathering news, and writing student journalism?  What elements of journalism do you need to work on, and what would you like our next unit to focus on?

Today students will:

  1. Review pages 32-48 of The Manual.
  2. Discuss good journalistic writing techniques (LA.B.2.4).
  3. Post 5 new article ideas to their blogs.

Tonight’s homework is:

  1. Review the facts and quotes in News Writing Handout 5.  Decide which facts are most important, which quotes are most salient, and write an 800 word mock news article as though you were a staff writer for The Rockville Rampage.  You can use either the inverted pyramid or the wineglass article structure.  Post the first draft to your blog by Tuesday.
  2. EXTRA CREDIT: In light of today’s lesson, revise your article one more time before our editorial staff gets to work on it.  Remember, the less work our editors have to put into your article, the better chance it will show up in the paper.

I honestly think that I have a lot more weaknesses and probably my only strength is to take advice and give. i would really like to work on being more punctual and learning how to penetrate into peoples minds and gathering information durring interviews.

    Oops! Wrong post
My personal strengths are asking questions during an interview and getting good quotes. I still need work on the structure of the article and how to portray my ideas best without giving an opinion. We should work on opinion pieces next

My personal strengths in cultivating sources, gathering news, and writing student journalism are thta i can be nice and push the person that is getting interviewd tot tell me about the information that i want to know. The elements of journalism that I need to work on, is on my spelling, I have many problems with that whne it comes to writting articles. And what would you like on my next unit to focus on other subjects but am undecided.

My personal strenghts when it comes to writing, cultivating information, and gathering news is that I am not shy to interview people, I am creative when it comes to writing and I know how to do a lot of research.

I feel that I need to work on my structure and making it sound less like an essay.I would like our next unit to be about how to come up with a good concrete article idea.

I think my stregnths are getting good quotes and organizing different subtopics into an article. I do need more work on keeping my opinion out of my article and not writing more information than what is necessary.

My strengths as a student journalist include using quotes in the right place, giving complete information, and using the right sentence strucuture. My weaknesses include basically using the journalistic style of writing. The next topic I would like us to focus on is how to begin your article, and end it using phrases that do not include your opinion but making a strong statement.

My strengths in cultivating my sources
is that I find them right awy. My strengths
in writting is that I have a creative mind :) hehe. and that I writte my stories based on journalistic information that I gathered through interviews.
I would say that I would need to work on my ENGLISH SKILLS because in here you need AP english :( or even higher if that is possible :) thats it I guess

Strengths: getting down to the point not writing that much irrelevant information
Weaknesses: Interviewing alot of people at a time, writing an article with a limited amount of time, getting enough information.

I really cannot say that i have “people” sources because in my story i do not have any quotes but i did interview several teens and from their input and an online source , i developed my article. I think im a pretty decent journalist but due to this being my first story ever i may have lacked a bit but i do have the potential to write a good story , i make MINOR punctuationn mistakes but other than that im pretty good (:

I listen all around to see if people are talking about my article. In writing my article, I take the suggestions given seriously. I try my best to not give in my opinion.
I need to work on my article structure, bringing down my wordiness, making time to interview people, not using quotes for everything, and asking back to back follow up questions.
I would like the next unit base on my weaknesses. All mentioned above. :)

I think that i am good at gathering information and transforming it into a story. I think i have a good command of the words, but at the same time, i have to go over the type of writing that is used for journalism.

My personal strengths include my writing ability and the way I am able to gather the information I need. I understand the journalistic style and have a good command of language. I would like to work on a stronger journalistic style and discover more than one way to write a sentance.

I am still getting interviews and not writing my article yet. No one has revised it so i really don’t know what my strengths are yet.
I really want to practice on writing in the journalistic writing style. The whole wine glass.

I feel that my personal strengths in journalism are my abilities to form article ideas and visualize the outcome of my piece which helps in the development of my piece. I enjoy the final phase of what we do as journalists, and that is writing the piece.

The elements of journalism I need assistance in are the formatting and layout of the piece. I feel I need to be instructed on examples of articles and interview tips.

I think that my personal strenght would probably be is getting people to say things that you might want to hear. Now the elements that i need to work on would be like choosing what information to publish, putting it everything to sound good and write a well enough article. I think that i still have to think about what i want to write about next.

My personal strenghts are that y amvery buggy to people that i interview,y will bug you until y i get the answer that y want to hear and the people that are reading my article.

but my weakness is that y like to give my opinion on everything even if it is on a commercial or a news article. An y would like for us to work on a srtonger journalistic form.

When It comes to gathering news I give it all I got! When one door closes I will open three new ones. After I have gathered information then I must get concentrated and then begin to write. Of course there is always room for improvement. There are many things I need to work on. One for example is to make sure my article flows. That each paragraph connects and make every information I write clear for the reader! I believe our next unit should work on ways to teach students how to put thought and ideas onto paper!
